Define goals and site constraints
The first conversation should cover how you want to use the yard, what does not work now, your priorities and the property’s practical limits. Photos, a rough plan and examples you like help.
Access, slope, drainage, existing structures and utilities all shape what is realistic. Share known issues early.
Develop a workable plan
A design connects the main spaces, circulation, grades, materials and planting. Early choices may be revised as the team studies site conditions and budget.
Ask which decisions are included in design and which will be finalized before construction. Confirm the scope in writing.
Price and sequence the build
A useful proposal describes the work to be done, selected materials or allowances, and exclusions. Construction commonly involves preparation and site work before visible finishes.
If the project will be phased, plan connections now so later work does not require removing completed areas.
Review the finished site
Walk the project with the contractor, ask how surfaces and planting should be cared for, and document any items that need attention.
