Make the entry obvious
The path from parking or sidewalk to the front door should feel direct and comfortable. Consider width, steps, lighting and how guests approach in rain.
An attractive planting bed cannot compensate for an awkward route or slippery transition.
Plan the hardscape and grades together
Paths, driveways, walls and lawn edges should connect at sensible elevations. Watch where water moves during storms, especially near the house and along retaining edges.
Resolve those relationships before selecting paver colour or bed shapes.
Use planting to frame, not block
Choose plants for mature size, light and soil conditions. Keep sightlines, windows and access in mind, and give beds enough space for plants to grow.
A simple palette repeated in a few areas often feels more cohesive than many unrelated varieties.
Keep maintenance realistic
Ask how much pruning, watering and seasonal work the design will require. Durable edges and clear lawn shapes can make routine care easier.
